MARQUETTE- Bob Bastian, who served as interim head coach in 2016-17 and as assistant coach in 2015-16, has been named the head Northern Michigan men's and women's golf coach, according to a university news release.

The release reads as follows:

"Bob stepped in on short notice in August and did an exceptional job as interim head coach," said director of athletics Forrest Karr. "Bob is respected by co-workers and has built many strong relationships with members of the greater Marquette golf community. He cares about the student-athletes, and it shows in every decision he makes. Northern Michigan golf is in good hands going forward."

This season, Bastian led the second-year women's golf program to an NCAA East Super Regional berth and a runner-up finish at the GLIAC Championships. The Wildcats finished in the top five at seven of their 11 events and entered the NCAA East Super Regional ranked fifth in their region.

The men's team placed in the top five at three events. A highlight of its season was a third-place finish in a competitive 20-team field at the Kohler Collegiate Classic.

Five Northern Michigan golfers, Karissa Guthrie, Haley Hewer, Martin Eliasson, Austin Elsner and Avery Rochester, ultimately earned 2017 all-GLIAC honorable mention accolades based on their Golfstat regional ranking.

"To have the opportunity to be the head coach of the men's and women's teams at Northern Michigan is something I'm very passionate about," Bastian said. "Since I began as the interim coach, everyone has been incredibly supportive of me. The administration, community and GLIAC coaches have all done a great job of fostering a positive environment for the student-athletes and myself. We have amazing players here at Northern Michigan who are a joy to coach on and off the course. I think both programs have very bright futures, and I'm excited to see where we can go in years to come."

Bastian served as an assistant coach during the 2015-16 campaign and helped guide the Wildcat men to their first NCAA Central/Midwest Regional appearance since 1999. They climbed as high as No. 15 in the national Golfstat rankings and placed in the top five at five events, including the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional.

Bastian also worked closely with the Wildcat women. He organized and implemented workouts and practices for both teams and ran the program's primary fall fundraiser, a college amateur golf outing.

At the end of the season, Elsner was named to the all-GLIAC first team, becoming the first Northern Michigan golfer since 1998 to earn a spot on either the first or second all-GLIAC team. Guthrie, Eliasson and Emil Lundgren were placed on the honorable mention team.

Bastian became an elected member of the Professional Golf Association in 2015. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Professional Golf Management from Ferris State in 2014 and is currently working towards his Master's Degree in Business Administration at Northern Michigan.

A native of Norway, Michigan, Bastian completed his PGA internships at TimberStone (Iron Mountain, Michigan), Rancho Canada Club (Carmel, California) and Marquette Golf Club. During the summer of 2016, he worked as Marquette Golf Club's Assistant Golf Professional.
